Concordia Seniors

Con U Seniors is a course offered through Concordia University’s Senior Non-Credit Program, which was establishes in 1983 and is exclusively run by volunteers. It is home to over 350 students, and is operated by the School of Extended Learning’s Student Transition Center. The program provides access to university level education at friendly senior rates. It offers non-credit programs to students over 55 years of age, with the goal of allowing them to satisfy their thirst for learning without the pressures of writing assignments, exams, and seeking high marks (Bosker, 2012). In the Fall of 2017 I had the privilege of teaching a group of participants expressing a very open interest in learning techniques from a variety of mediums such as, but not limited to, drawing, painting, and sculpting. Although they were all there to learn about and make art, they also wanted to relax, socialize, and have fun, whilst being creative.

Facial Proportions

Through a series of demonstrations and observational drawing exercises participants gained a strong understanding of the facial proportions. The goal was for participants to have a good understanding of facial proportions so that they could be practiced and perfected over time.

Color Theory

After a brief introduction to color theory participants were invited to put these into practice. With the use of acrylic paints they gave new life to their works from our lesson on facial proportions.

Painting to Music

As and introduction to abstract art participants translated the sound of music into imagery while experimenting with different colors, shapes, forms, and gestural marks.
